Ukraine has two different characters for giving presents during winter festivals. Santa Claus is called Did Moroz (Father Frost) or Svyatyy Mykolay (Saint Nicholas). St. Nicholas Day Ukraine celebrates on December 19. The same is true with Santa Claus Ukrainian children write letters to Saint Nicholas where they ask for their wishes – new toys or health and happiness for parents, relatives, and friends. Saint Nicholas makes the wish of the children who behave well during the year come true. That is why children try to make good think during the year. Women bake round pies called ‘mykolaychyky’ with various fillings and decorations. Parents put these cookies under the children’s pillows as sweet presents for the holiday and as treats for all their friends and relatives. St. Nicholas’ Day is a great time in Ukraine. People invite guests and have family dinners. Parents and grandparents tell their children stories from St. Nicholas’s life and teach them to be as kind, laborious, charitable, and honest as he was. People are sure that on the night of December 19 all their sincere wishes will be heard and fulfilled.
